The optimization packs for Microsoft Teams and Zoom were made available and can be installed on the workstations to improve the user experience. The below figure illustrates the working of the Microsoft Teams optimization pack in VMware. These work on a similar principle in Citrix as well.
The product installed via these has the capability of working with the plugin on the endpoint device. For Zoom, details about compatibility with various VDI providers is available here. Citrix Viewer app requires access to macOS Security and Privacy preferences for screen sharing to work.
If you want to disable Microsoft Teams optimization, run this command in a terminal and restart the Citrix Workspace app:. This section provides recommendations and guidance to estimate how many users or virtual machines VMs can be supported on a single physical host. The idea is to find out how many users or VMs can be ran on a single piece of hardware running a major hypervisor. This section includes guidance to estimate SSS.
Note that the guidance is high level and might not necessarily be specific to your unique situation or environment. Citrix recommends using this guidance and these simple rules to quickly estimate SSS only. However, Citrix recommends using Login VSI or the load testing tool of your choice to validate results, especially before purchasing hardware or making any financial decisions.
To enable optimization for Microsoft Teams, use the Manage console policy described in the Microsoft Teams redirection policy. This policy is ON by default. In addition to this policy being enabled, HDX checks to verify that the version of the Citrix Workspace app is at least the minimum required version. Microsoft Teams reads the key to load in VDI mode. Loading the API is the first step toward redirection.
Exit Microsoft Teams by right-clicking the notification area icon and restarting. Microsoft Teams relies on Media Processor servers in Microsoft for meetings or multiparty calls.
So the network health between the peer and the Microsoft cloud determines the performance of the call. For example, webcam access by the RealTime Media Engine during a call locks the imaging device during a call. When the device is released, it becomes available for Microsoft Teams. Optimal audio and video quality require a network connection to the Microsoft cloud that has low latency, low jitter, and low packet loss. Backhauling of Microsoft Teams audio-video RTP traffic from Citrix Workspace app users at branch office locations to a data center before going to the internet can add excessive latency.
It might also cause congestion on WAN links. This use is to identify, categorize, and steer Microsoft Teams traffic. Business broadband internet connections in many areas suffer from intermittent packet loss, periods of excessive jitter, and outages.
You can use multiple meetings or chat windows for Microsoft Teams in Windows. This feature is supported with Citrix Workspace app for Windows Talk to your IT admin. If you enable the optimization GPO in the virtual desktop, these clients, although not officially supported, will begin implementing offload.
The bugs we found in these clients during beta testing are fixed in Horizon Client for Windows version or later for Horizon 8 or Horizon Client for Windows 5. VMware strongly recommends using the officially supported versions. For beta testing, VMware published the Horizon Client beta installer for Mac via the beta portal that supports optimization. Some organizations might require that the process name of the Teams Optimization Pack be added to a firewall allowlist, to allow communication to the Microsoft Teams Cloud server.
The process name is vmware-remotemks. This is a Microsoft restriction. In certain low-powered clients, users may want to turn off software acoustic echo cancellation to reduce CPU usage. In most cases, VMware recommends using the default configuration, which is designed for optimal audio experience. But if you are having issues with echo, software acoustic echo cancellation can be configured by using a GPO on the Horizon Agent or by setting a registry key on the Horizon Client.
Note that this configuration is only supported on Windows Clients. After setting this policy, you must log out of the Horizon desktop for the GPO policies to take effect.
This configuration can also be applied on the Horizon Client for Windows device by setting the following registry key:. To troubleshoot, start by checking whether Microsoft Teams launched in optimized mode and whether the correct local client device names are being picked up.
If so, you can check whether the Microsoft Teams redirection plugin has been installed and check the logs to verify that optimization has been enabled. All users with admin credentials on the machine can uninstall Teams. This uninstalls Teams from the Program Files x86 folder or Program Files folder, depending on the operating system environment.

If you're using a version of the Remote Desktop client for macOS that's earlier than Microsoft Teams certified cameras. Skype for Business certified peripherals are compatible with Microsoft Teams too. To experience the Microsoft Teams Companion mode join a meeting from your computer then after you join the meeting, open the Microsoft Teams mobile client.
In the mobile client, you will see a notification bar displayed asking if you would like to utilize your phone as a companion device for the active meeting. Running MS Teams in a virtual environment has a lot of moving parts, all of which can be difficult to troubleshoot. Therefore, we strongly recommend consulting with Microsoft and your virtualization vendor for support. If Evolve IP is your voice provider for Teams Direct Routing, we may be able to assist with your troubleshooting, but we can only troubleshoot our own voice infrastructure.
Unfortunately, we do not have any means to troubleshoot Microsoft's voice infrastructure or your virtual infrastructure.
